About SSC GD Constable Examination

The SSC General Duty (GD) Constable exam is one of India's largest government recruitment exams, drawing 50+ lakh applicants every cycle. It recruits General Duty Constables for the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) — BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB — along with Assam Rifles (Rifleman), Sashastra Seema Bal, Secretariat Security Force (SSF) and the NIA.

Selection is a multi-stage process: Computer-Based Examination (CBE) → Physical Efficiency Test (PET) → Physical Standard Test (PST) → Detailed Medical Examination (DME) → Document Verification. Each stage is elimination-based, so candidates must clear every stage in sequence.

SSC GD is open to 10th-pass candidates and is the most accessible route into India's central armed forces. The pay scale is Level-3 (₹21,700-₹69,100) plus dearness allowance, ration, kit, free medical for self and family, leave travel concession, and pension benefits.

Conducted by: Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Government of India — for the Ministry of Home Affairs

Preparation Strategy

Start physical training in PARALLEL with study from Day 1 — many strong CBE scorers get eliminated at PET. Build cardio capacity for the 5 km run (males) / 1.6 km (females) at least 8-12 weeks before the test date.

For the CBE, NCERT Class 8-10 Math textbook covers everything in Elementary Mathematics. Solve every worked example and chapter exercise. Don't go above Class 10 level — GD doesn't test advanced shortcuts.

Reasoning rewards practice. 15-20 questions a day from each subtopic (series, coding, blood relations, classification) for 60 days makes a serious difference. Lucent Reasoning or any basic SSC Reasoning book works.

GK and current affairs need consistency. Focus on Indian-context questions (CAPFs structure, ranks, recent operations, freedom struggle, sports). Read a daily summary like Adda247 free current affairs PDFs or Career Power monthly bulletin.

For language, choose between English and Hindi based on your comfort. Most North Indian candidates pick Hindi — practice basic grammar, common muhavare and short reading passages. South Indian candidates often pick English — focus on simple grammar, basic vocabulary.

Recent Changes to Know

  • Marking scheme is now +2 marks for correct and -0.25 (one-fourth) for wrong — confirms most recent SSC GD pattern.
  • Total 80 questions, 160 marks, 60 minutes — sections are 20 questions each.
  • No sectional timing in CBE — candidates can spend more time on stronger sections.
  • PET running distance and timing are strictly enforced; relaxation only for category candidates as per official notification.
