Start with General Intelligence & ReasoningAbout SSC Havaldar (CBIC / CBN) Examination
The SSC Havaldar exam recruits candidates for the post of Havaldar in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN). It is conducted as part of the same SSC MTS notification, meaning candidates apply for MTS and Havaldar through a single application — but Havaldar has additional physical fitness requirements.
Havaldar in CBIC supports customs operations (preventing smuggling, inspecting cargo at ports/airports/border posts) and indirect tax collection. CBN Havaldars work on anti-narcotics enforcement under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Both roles offer Level-3 pay (₹21,700-₹69,100) plus allowances and ration money.
Selection involves a Computer-Based Examination identical to MTS (Session I + Session II), followed by Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST). Failing PET/PST disqualifies you for Havaldar specifically — but you can still be selected for regular MTS posts if your CBE score is sufficient.
Conducted by: Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Government of India — recruited under the SSC MTS notification

Preparation Strategy
If you're applying for Havaldar specifically, start walk training EARLY — the 1600m / 1 km walk in fixed time is achievable but requires building stamina over 6-8 weeks. Many candidates who clear CBE comfortably fail PET because they don't train.
CBE preparation is identical to MTS — same syllabus, same pattern. Use NCERT Class 8-10 Math, basic reasoning practice and current affairs from last 6 months.
For General Awareness, add a small focus on the CBIC and CBN context — knowing what these departments do, brief overview of NDPS Act, and major customs/narcotics operations in recent years helps with 2-3 GA questions.
Session I has ZERO negative marking — attempt every question even if you have to guess. The 25% probability of a correct guess is pure upside.
In Session II, be selective. With +3 correct and -1 wrong, ratio matters: only attempt questions you're 70%+ sure of, plus high-confidence eliminations on others.
Recent Changes to Know
- Havaldar is recruited under the same SSC MTS notification — single application covers both. You choose your post preference at application time.
- Session I has no negative marking; Session II has -1 negative. Marking: +3 for correct, -1 for wrong in Session II.
- PET is a WALK test (not running) — 1600m male / 1 km female with strict time limit.
- Failing PET/PST disqualifies for Havaldar specifically; you remain eligible for regular MTS posts if you applied for both.
