About JEE Main — Joint Entrance Examination (Main)

JEE Main is the gateway to undergraduate engineering (B.E./B.Tech) admissions at the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). It is also the qualifying screen for JEE Advanced — only the top ~2.5 lakh JEE Main scorers each year become eligible to register for Advanced (which is the route into the 23 IITs).

JEE Main is held in two sessions every year — typically January (Session 1) and April (Session 2). A candidate may appear in either session or both; the better of the two NTA percentile scores is used for the final ranking. The exam is computer-based (CBT), conducted in multiple shifts, with marks normalised across shifts using the NTA's percentile method.

JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) is strictly NCERT Class 11–12 aligned across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Since 2024 the NTA has rationalised the syllabus — several Class 11/12 units were officially removed (full list under Recent Changes). The 2026 syllabus is unchanged from this rationalised version. Always treat the official NTA Information Bulletin for the specific year as the final authority.

Conducted by: JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) — an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education, Government of India

Eligibility

JEE Main — eligibility to appear

Age:
No age limit to appear for JEE Main. (Admitting institutes may apply their own age norms at counselling.)
Education:
Candidates who passed Class 12 / equivalent in 2024 or 2025, or who are appearing in 2026, are eligible. There is no minimum percentage required merely to appear in JEE Main.
Nationality:
Indian nationals; OCI/PIO and foreign nationals may appear subject to the rules in the Information Bulletin (seat eligibility and quotas are decided at counselling).
Attempts:
JEE Main can be attempted in 3 consecutive years (2 sessions per year).

JEE Main — admission criteria (NITs/IIITs/CFTIs via JoSAA)

Age:
Age norms applied at counselling are set by the admitting institute / JoSAA; refer to that year's JoSAA business rules.
Education:
For admission to NITs / IIITs / CFTIs through JoSAA, a candidate needs 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) OR be in the top 20 percentile of their board's Class 12 results.
Nationality:
As per the JoSAA business rules of the year.
Attempts:
Subject to the eligibility-to-appear rules above.

Exam Pattern

Stage-by-stage breakdown of the recruitment process.

JEE Main — Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech)

Mode
Computer Based Test (CBT), online, held in two sessions (Jan & April); best score used
Sections
Physics · Chemistry · Mathematics (equal weight). Each subject: Section A = 20 MCQs, Section B = 5 numerical-answer questions
Questions
75 compulsory questions (25 per subject)
Marks
300 marks (each question 4 marks)
Duration
3 hours (180 minutes)
Negative marking
+4 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong answer; the −1 negative marking now applies to Section B (numerical) as well

Final ranking uses NTA percentile/normalisation across sessions and shifts; the better of the two session scores is considered.

Preparation Strategy

NCERT Class 11 and 12 (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) is the non-negotiable base for JEE Main — finish it cover to cover before heavy reference books, especially for Inorganic and Physical Chemistry where NCERT lines are asked almost verbatim.

Build speed and accuracy with timed, full-syllabus mock tests in CBT format. JEE Main rewards consistent accuracy under a tight clock more than it rewards solving the hardest possible problem slowly.

Track the post-2024 rationalisation: do NOT spend time on units that have been officially removed (see Recent Changes). Studying deleted topics is wasted effort for JEE Main.

Solve last 10 years of JEE Main papers topic-wise — the question style and difficulty band repeat predictably, and PYQ practice translates directly into Section A and Section B confidence.

Recent Changes to Know

  • 2024 NTA rationalisation (continues for 2026). Physics: the 'Communication Systems' unit was removed in full, with sub-topics trimmed from several other units. Mathematics: 'Mathematical Induction' and 'Mathematical Reasoning' units were removed. Chemistry: a large number of units were removed in full — including States of Matter, Solid State, Surface Chemistry, Hydrogen, s-Block Element, Environmental Chemistry, Polymers and Chemistry in Everyday Life.
  • Section B (numerical-answer) is now fully compulsory — all 5 questions per subject must be attempted — and negative marking (−1) applies to Section B, not just the MCQ Section A.
  • JEE Main is held in two sessions (typically January and April); the better of the two NTA scores is used for the final rank. The top ~2.5 lakh JEE Main qualifiers become eligible for JEE Advanced.

Important Dates

Notification
The JEE Main Information Bulletin is usually released by the NTA a few months before Session 1 (typically late in the preceding year)
Exam
JEE Main is usually held in two sessions — around January (Session 1) and April (Session 2)
Results
Each session result/percentile is declared within a few weeks of that session; the combined rank list follows after Session 2

JEE Main dates change every cycle. Do NOT rely on these timelines — always confirm the latest Information Bulletin and notices on the official NTA JEE Main site before applying or planning your prep.
