Real examAbout RRB Technician — Grade I (Signal) and Grade III recruitment
The RRB Technician examination recruits technical staff for Indian Railways across two distinct grades — Grade III (a 10th-pass + ITI based trade Technician role across Mechanical, Electrical and S&T departments) and Grade I (Signal) (a B.Sc. or engineering diploma/degree based role specifically for the Signal & Telecommunication department). Each grade sits its own single computer-based test (CBT) of 100 questions in 90 minutes, with different sections.
Grade III hires Technicians for ITI trades such as Fitter, Electrician, Wireman, Welder, Carpenter, AC Mechanic, Electronics Mechanic, Instrument Mechanic and similar — these are field maintenance roles in railway depots, workshops, electrical loco sheds and S&T installations. Grade I (Signal) is a specialised role for installing, maintaining and troubleshooting railway signalling and telecommunication equipment — relay interlocking, axle counters, point machines, optical fibre and railway communication networks.
Selection is a single computer-based test (CBT) followed by Document Verification and Medical Examination — there is no second CBT. Both grades' CBTs have 100 questions in 90 minutes with negative marking of 1/3 per wrong answer, but the sections differ: Grade III has Mathematics, Reasoning, General Science and General Awareness, while Grade I (Signal) has General Awareness, Reasoning, Computer Basics, Mathematics and Basic Science & Engineering. Medical standards differ too (C-1/C-2 for most Grade III posts; B-1/B-2 for Grade I Signal).
Who the exam suits: Grade III is the natural route for an ITI-certified tradesperson who wants a permanent railway job in the trade they trained for, while Grade I (Signal) suits a B.Sc. (Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, IT or Instrumentation) or engineering diploma/degree holder who wants technical work in the safety-critical signalling and telecom side of the railway. Both roles are hands-on and depot- or section-based rather than office-based: shift duty, outdoor maintenance, breakdown attendance and strict safety procedures are part of the job from the first posting, which is why the medical standards for vision and colour perception are applied without exception.
How to use this page: start with the eligibility block for your grade and route (ITI trade, B.Sc., or engineering diploma/degree), then read the CBT pattern for that grade — the two grades have different section weights and a wrong answer costs one-third of a mark in both. The syllabus lists the topics for each section, the preparation section gives a 12-week plan and the attempt discipline the negative marking requires, and the dates section tracks the current cycle. Keep your trade or diploma certificates and mark sheets in order early, because document verification is where a mismatch between the application and the certificates disqualifies an otherwise selected candidate.

Read the preparation guideRecent Changes to Know
- The 2024 notification consolidated recruitment into TWO clear grades — Grade III (10th + ITI) and Grade I (Signal) (B.Sc. or engineering diploma/degree). Earlier 'Technician Gateman' / 'Technician (Workshop)' style splits have been streamlined under these two umbrellas.
- There is no CBT 2 any more: since CEN 02/2024 each grade is selected on a single CBT of 100 questions in 90 minutes, followed by Document Verification and Medical Examination.
- The two grades sit different papers: Grade III — Mathematics 25, Reasoning 25, General Science 40, General Awareness 10; Grade I (Signal) — General Awareness 10, Reasoning 15, Computer Basics 20, Mathematics 20, Basic Science & Engineering 35.
- Grade I (Signal) eligibility is a B.Sc. (Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, IT or Instrumentation) or a 3-year engineering diploma or engineering degree — 10+2 alone does not qualify.
- Negative marking is 1/3 mark per wrong answer in both grades' CBTs.
- Application fee remains ₹500 for UR/OBC and ₹250 for SC/ST/PwBD/Women/Ex-Servicemen, with partial refund (₹400 / ₹250 respectively) on appearing in the CBT.
